Retrograde Signaling Causes Excitement
نویسندگان
چکیده
Retrograde signaling is a powerful tool to shape synaptic transmission, typically inducing inhibition of transmitter release. A new study published in this issue of Neuron by Carta et al. (2014) now provides strong support for arachidonic acid as a potentiating retrograde messenger.

Excitement Reduces Inhibition via Endocannabinoids
Previous work has suggested a role for retrograde synaptic signaling via endogenous cannabinoids in regulating the inhibitory control of neuronal activity. In this issue of Neuron, Chevaleyre and Castillo provide evidence for another form of endocannabinoid-mediated depression of hippocampal inhibition, which is activity dependent and long lasting.
متن کاملSilencing of IkBβ mRNA causes disruption of mitochondrial retrograde signaling and suppression of tumor growth in vivo.
A number of studies show that mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) depletion and attendant activation of retrograde signaling induces tumor progression. We have reported previously that activation of a novel nuclear factor-Kappa B pathway is critical for the propagation of mitochondrial retrograde signaling, which induces both phenotypic and morphological changes in C2C12 myoblasts and A549 lung carcinoma...
متن کاملSubcellular Knockout of Importin β1 Perturbs Axonal Retrograde Signaling
Subcellular localization of mRNA enables compartmentalized regulation within large cells. Neurons are the longest known cells; however, so far, evidence is lacking for an essential role of endogenous mRNA localization in axons. Localized upregulation of Importin β1 in lesioned axons coordinates a retrograde injury-signaling complex transported to the neuronal cell body. Here we show that a long...
متن کاملMitochondrial genomic dysfunction causes dephosphorylation of Sch9 in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
TORC1-dependent phosphorylation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Sch9 was dramatically reduced upon exposure to a protonophore or in respiration-incompetent ρ(0) cells but not in respiration-incompetent pet mutants, providing important insight into the molecular mechanisms governing interorganellar signaling in general and retrograde signaling in particular.
متن کاملMitochondrial retrograde signaling.
Mitochondrial retrograde signaling is a pathway of communication from mitochondria to the nucleus under normal and pathophysiological conditions. The best understood of such pathways is retrograde signaling in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It involves multiple factors that sense and transmit mitochondrial signals to effect changes in nuclear gene expression; these changes lead to ...
